Accessing the Register
The CSA and DBSG is supporting a campaign to save the electoral register – and working to allow the industry access to the full register.
Although public perception is that the current economic climate would make it a 'boom time' for collection agencies, the truth is very different. The very real likelihood that the industry will lose the electoral register – an invaluable source of data used to trace consumers who have moved without telling their creditors – is a crippling prospect.
It would reduce the ability to help consumers deal with their debts – in turn returning money to the economy. It also increases the chances of mistracing – and increasing the chances of the wrong people being chased for debts that aren't their own.
The CSA and DBSG have been campaigning for access to the full electoral roll for some time – as a tool to assist in the correct identification of consumers and to enable the industry to offer suitable help in dealing with their debt.
Industry leaders strongly believe that this is an essential step to help honest consumers find the best solution to repay their debts, while also helping to identify those individuals who are seeking to avoid repayment even though they can afford it.
