Industry Warned on Roll Data

The credit industry has been quick to respond to discussions concerning the future of the edited electoral register, with warnings that it might permanently damage vital access to key data.

The MoJ's consultation, Electoral Registers: Proposed changes to the Edited Register closed earlier in the year and it gave various options, with many in the industry preferring to see the removal of the edited register in the hope of being granted increased access to the full electoral roll.

However, not all industry experts are sure. Industry expert Anthony Sharp said: "The MoJ has stated that they will not be considering extended access to the full register for quite a while – may I suggest, if ever.

"This places the industry, when responding to this paper, in a very tricky position and there is a serious chance that it could fall between two stools by agreeing to abolish the edited register as long as it is given access to the full register. To me this approach of the MoJ is immoral."

In its response Callcredit added: "It is clear that the public understanding of what edited registered data is used for is at best skewed by implication and at worst completely inaccurate."
