Input wanted on Champion role

The Consumer Minister has started a public consultation on the launch of a consumer advocate to champion consumer rights.

Kevin Brennan MP will focus the consultation on the proposed powers and role of the advocate, who will be charged with ensuring consumers get a fairer deal in the future.

The creation of this high profile position was announced last year and the role is expected to be filled before March 2010.

Mr Brennan explained "The consumer advocate's job will be to fight consumers' corner as a new national figurehead. The advocate will support consumers, take legal action on their behalf and help them get compensation and warn consumers about the latest scams. This is especially important during the downturn when people's finances are hard pressed."

Claire Hughes, managing associate at law firm Addleshaw Goddard, had reservations however. She said that the industry should be concerned and that it might turn into 'trial by media'.

The consultation is available online at www.berr.gov.uk/consultations/page53813.html
